1959 - FEC train boarding passengers at the North Miami station

North Miami, Florida

Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this image.

This FEC North Miami station was one of the Florida Highway Patrol's Driver License Stations after the FEC dropped passenger service due to the prolonged strike and their decision to only haul freight. The drivers license station was moved here from a location on the east side of West Dixie Highway above 135th Street that was there in the early to mid-60's.

I took the Silver Meteor from Miami to Washington DC where my cousin would meet me. I traveled alone, It was in 1957 and I was seated next to a Catholic Nun, Sister Mary and when lunch time rolled around Sister Mary and I would go to the dining car and order lunch. I ordered fish, that evening Sister Mary and I would go to the dining car once again for dinner and I would order the fish dinner again. Sister Mary says, you must really like fish. I said to her, It's Friday I'm kinda limited on what I can eat. She says well, you're a good boy. This was not my first train trip, I told Sister Mary, when I went up North 2 years earlier my Mom would take me into the club car after dinner and I would stand at the back door of the club car and watch the rails feed out the back. However, Mom was not with me this trip. Sister Mary says, come on I'll go with you. Now what in the world would someone in the club car enjoying an after dinner cocktail think when a Nun and a 10 year old boy comes strolling in. The Lord truly works in mysterious ways...........

I'm pretty sure this was the train station our kindergarten class did a field trip up to (Hollywood?) and back. It would have been this year, '59.

Thanks David, I'll change the comments. Now that I think about it I went for my restricted license on the east side of W. Dixie and that was years before I got my full license renewed at the former train station. Don

You do have the sequence of events reversed. I got my restricted driver's license [in 1962] on the east side of West Dixie Highway [I think between 125 St. & 135 St.]. Later [in the 70;s] the license examining station was moved to the FEC station you show in your picture.
