1958 - The Miami News building on NW 7th Street

Miami, Florida

Thank you to former Miamian Dave Kleylein (William Jennings Bryan Elementary, North Miami Junior High, North Miami High, and Norland High Class of 1962) for contributing this image.

As I recall, this building was fairly new and my recollection is that the address was 1001 NW 7 Street. They have evidently dropped the word "daily" from their name by this point as it was "The Miami Daily News" for a good period of time.

Most Miamians thought the Miami News was an outstanding newspaper, even though it was an afternoon paper six days a week and a morning paper on Sundays. It certainly gave The Miami Herald a long run for the money and many thought it to be a better newspaper than the Herald.

I am writing a biography about Bill Baggs and I love this image. Is it possible to purchase a high resolution version for use in the book?

The summer of 1957, I earned some college money working in the mail room here.

I was a copy boy for the News in this building. I remember Bill Baggs and some of the reporters, including Milt Sosin.

Thanks Jeff. My mother worked for the news in the 60s and it's what got me started in journalism and history. I wondered what happened to this wonderful paper. We always took both papers. The Herald was more serious while the News had a family, homey feel to it. The Herald was usually the Republican paper while the News supported the Democrats editorially.
I remember as a child Bill Baggs was the editor of the News.

The Miami News facilities on the Miami River was the new, modern home of the paper.

As everyone knows by now, the original building was the "News Tower" on Biscayne Boulevard, built in 1926 by Governor Cox of Ohio (the paper's owner) and modeled after the Giralda Tower in Spain). The tower grew more famous as the entry point for Cubans escaping Fidel Castro's revolution and arriving en masse in Miami in the early 1960's and was re-dubbed "The Freedom tower".

Not too long after the Miami News relocated, financial woes beset the paper and they were forced to enter into a JOA (Joint Operating Agreement) with the Miami Herald (where they would lease space inside the Herald building and the Herald's presses would print the News).

In the late 80's, the Miami (Daily) News folded...

For many years after The Miami News moved out, this building was used to build the floats for the King Orange Parade.
