1920 - Hialeah Cash Store, Hialeah

Hialeah, Florida

This image is a William A. Fishbaugh photograph donated to the Florida State Archives. I cropped and enhanced it for website display.

The state archives identifies this as the Hialeah Cash Store but I believe the name "Cash" was a person's name since everything was cash back then. The store had a gas pump in front and the sign says "repairs."

other sizes: small medium original auto

J. B. Cash was an oil distributor in the 30s - 60s in So. Fla. I believe it was Standard Oil. He had stores all over the area. His headquarters was in Princton and he lived on Old Cutler Road in that area of So. Dade Co.

Notice that the hand gas pump is hidden behind the car, but the globe and glass canister is visible above the roofline of the car. The car looks like a Cadillac.

We went to church with J.B. and his wife in the 1950s and 60s at First Christian Church in downtown Miami. I remember him as a nice but rather eccentric old man. I believe he left most of his money to the J. B. Cash Foundation, which is still active in the Homestead area of Dade County.
