My Dad used to (still does) call it "old clackity", that is, Us1 between Perrine and Florida City.

You can't forget that NW 36 ST was cement street, also. I grew up in Allapatah in the 80's and use to hear it everytime we went west on 36ST to Hialeah.

I remember that sound as a kid! I completely forgot about it until now. My sons don't have that small joy when we head up to Cutler Ridge Mall (screw off "Southland" and "Cutler Bay").

born and raised in perrine used to lay in bed at night and hear the trucks running over those expansion joints. can still hear that to this day. that was in the 40s and 50s. sometimes time does stand still.

To give you some idea where this is, it's now a car dealership just south of the Cutler Ridge Mall. It's property between 211 St and a canal. This appears to be after US1 was widened. Notice the right (SB) lanes are concrete. You can see the expansion joints. The NB lanes are smooth asphalt. Many of us remember the unique sound of going over that old cement US1. To a little kid with an active imagination, it sounded like horses galloping. Real horsepower. I think that type of roadway is all gone, except maybe some sections of old Dixie near Homestead. The sound still makes me grin.
