Westwood Lakes, our first home in Fl. bought new in 54, lived on 111th ave and 40th. I remember we planted our grass in patches rather than a roll of sod. I would go out on my bike to fish Snapper Creek before school started and later I'd bike to Biscayne bay to fish. We never needed workout gyms! It incredible to see this photo of what it was before the build out. Wish I could get a large print to hang on my wall...Thank you.

Amazing photo. I lived on 103rd and Bird, beginning in the 70s. I can't believe how beautiful the area was just a few years before.

The area betwen 102 Ave and 105 Ave South of Bird Rd, about where the dark patch on the right is, was developed with homes by Mackle Brothers in 1958.

There was very little development along Miller until after the Civil Defense Center was constructed in the mid-50's. I used to travel out Miller in 1957 to operate the radio equipment in the Center and nobody wanted to be the last to leave in the dark because if you broke down you were stranded. It was mostly sawgrass West of the Maule Lakes between 72 Ave. and 77 Ave.

James, thanks for posting those great memories. It's kind of hard to fathom how many people now live on the land in the photo, and probably harder to fathom for today's folks to think of how few people lived there less than 60 years ago. Don

Don, my wif'e father, Robert L Garrison, built the lonely home visible on the west side of 97th ave., just south of Miller in 1947. He later built a home on either side of him so as to have neighbors. I can now see how I got lost while trying to pick up Betty for our first date. We were freshman at the University of Miami in 1951. Ninety seventh avenue did not extend North to Bird Road and I came to a dead end - skidding into an abandoned sofa at the southern terminus of the road visible in the lower right of your picture. Fortunately, I met her at the UM dance, and the rest, as they say, is history.
