1965 - the Dixie Drive-In Theatre at 14601 S. Dixie Highway (US 1), Miami

14601 S. Dixie Highway (US 1), Dade County, Florida

The aerial view is looking due west. These images should be popular with the kids from the SW section of Dade County. They make one wonder how many youngsters fell in love, not to mention lust, at this fine establishment and ended up getting married?

This is amazing! The house that i grew up in next to rockdale park is not even built yet (im 31). I never knew there used to be a drive in theatre where the publix is. Awesome picture of my old neighborhood.

Dear Guest 29-Sept-2008 - Those foundations were what remained of the old FEC Railroad station. They are currently being removed.

It is a long story, but in 1989ish, I acquired the 28 +/- acre "Rockdale" site (the triangular area) from FEC Railroad when I was with FDOT. The parcel was split up for several uses...the best being the preservation of the natural pineland (thanks to Miami-Dade County's Emily Young (deceased)).

The gentleman at FEC that was instrumental in putting the deal together was Roger Barreto (deceased). A great man. Miami-Dade County is in the process on naming the roadway along the corridor from SW 120th Street to SW 136th Street in Roger's honor. The right thing to do for a great man and a true friend.

Wow! It's amazing that if you look at the current sat map the footprint of King's Bay Shopping Center still follows the theatre property. Also amazing is how many of the surrounding houses still stand and are clearly identifiable.

QUITE A FEW MEMORIES HERE, MY DAD BUILT THAT HOUSE JUST BEHIND THE FENCE IN THE CENTER IN 1960. I LIVED THERE UNTIL 1970 WHEN I WENT INTO THE NAVY. THE HOUSE WAS SOLD TO PUBLIX IN 1979.

Does anyone know what those buildings directly west across US1 were. All that remains today are the foundations

Wow! I forgot how big it was...and I forgot about the back concession stand. In all the time I worked there I never went to the one in the rear of the lot. Someone robbed the entrance booth one night, that was scary...no cell phones, then. One of the guys had to run to the concession stand to call the police, the robbers were long gone. We served everything you can imagine...including some pretty good pizza. The whole concession stand was laid out so that everything flowed really well...but the bathrooms were disgusting!

Wow..quite the history lesson..but isn't Richmond Heights adjacent to the recently dug canal....that's been around since the 50's right?

Yup, that's what it says now, after you caught the error. Don

Er... isn't this looking west?

Notice the barren banks along the canal in the upper left--the canal was recently dug. Also note the cleared area on the right between sw 92-97 ave--Lake Lennar has yet to be dug.
