1960 - the Silver Sands motel at 301 Ocean Drive, Key Biscayne (2 images)

301 Ocean Drive, Key Biscayne, Florida

The was the first hotel south of the Crandon Park cabanas and the stretch of land and beach in between the two was undeveloped and a great place to make out with your girl on a blanket or in the water in the mid 60s. The Silver Sands was owned by Claughton Hotels, Inc. and they obtained a variance to put a nice restaurant named the Silver Dollar on the east end of the hotel so folks could dine overlooking the beach, surf and ocean. It was beautiful, the food was great and I have several fond memories of dining there in the mid to late 70s.

Sitting in the bar one night I thought it was raining on my open air blue sprite spots car! Went out and found out the bartender was just washing the window with the automatic system. What a relief! Many happy hours spent there as well as getting sun at crandon.

Attended UM from 82 - 85 - used to go to the beachside "hut" bar, with a cool balcony. As a child in the late 60s, I always wanted to stay in one of those center "cabins." I see it's still there, but somewhat of a dump. That oceanfront property must be incredibly valuable! Wonder what the deal is.

You can Google the name, and see recent reviews of the place.

While the restaurant is gone, We still stay at the Silver Sands when in town. It's like a little time-warp of old Key Biscayne!

The Sand Dollar Restaurant was the best restaurant to go to with a date in the 60's. They had a big picture window that overlooked the beach and a water line hooked up to it that ran water and simulated rain on the window. It was also a great place for Happy Hour!!

The Silver Sands was a local fact. At the other end of Crandon Bvd was the "Best Western". Probably the most eastern of Best Western motels.

Born (73) and raised in Miami, spent many summers renting at the Silver Sands...Key Biscayne is not what it used to be!
