When on vacation at the Castawsys In the mid 70s I would have breakfast at the HOJO’s on sunny isles
I was always served by a beautiful blonde girl who had a dark green Dodge Tradesman van. Her name was Patti Mosiello. I miss her

Hendrix and Zappa had a huge jam session at the Castaways after playing at the Miami Int'l. Pop Festival. Jimi wrote "Rainy Day, Dream Away" in the limo on the way back to the Castaways from the Pop Festival. YEA !!!!

My wife and I had a sundae here on our first date in May 1976, after seeing "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" at the Sunny Isles Theater.

I used to eat here sometimes after working as a bellhop at the Castaways in the mid 70's right before the Hart Family sold out to a bunch of foreign investors. It spelled the beginning of the end for the strip at Sunny Isles. The boom time was over and the hotels gradually got bought out and converted into condos or just torn down . Fond memories of going to Haulover beach and afterwards getting a coke float at the HOJO's!

By the way, does anyone out there remember a girl named Lucy Laufer who lived on Jefferson next to Lincoln Road Mall?
Just a thought!

As a U of M student fromn 1963 to 1968, we had a gang of freshman guys who had met a gang of high school senior girls from MB High and Coral Gables High. On weekends we would rent a few rooms at The Castaways (expensive!) or one of the other motels along Motel Row and just have a ball going from place to place, usually ending up at the Hot Shoppes drive in.
Thanks for the fabulous site.

Oh yeah, that's the Castaways. Got served in their famous "Wreck Bar" (with fake I.D.) a few times in my late teens right around when this photo was taken. Was shocked by the "outrageous" drink prices: $2.00 for a 7&7, and you had to buy two! But it was neat to have a drink like a big shot (although I'm certain I didn't look like one). Spent many evenings hangin' out around that corner with the old gang of buddies. The Newport hotel & lounge was directly behind the picture-taker.
