1931 - Pan American Airways System Sikorsky S-40 on the ramp at Dinner Key

Dinner Key, Miami, Florida

From the state archives description: "The Sikorsky S-40 was placed in operation by Pan American World Airways in 1931. The S-40s were the first four engine aircraft to be regularly used in commercial air service."

he Sikorsky S-40 was the first aircraft to carry a "Clipper" name. It had 38 seats, flew at 115 mph, had a 34,000 lb. max gross takeoff weight, and a 900 mile range. The S-40 was slow so it was used for shorter flights to Mexico, the Bahamas and Havana, Cuba. Only 3 were built and all for Pan American. The registrations were: NC-80V, NC-81V, NC-752V.

The S-40 was an amphibian, capable of flying off land or water. In 1935 they were converted to S-40As by removing the landing gear, shown here, and installing more powerful engines in order to improve payload, speed and range. For that effort the cruise speed was improved from 115 mph to 120. The range went from 875 to 900 miles. That Pan Am went to such expense and trouble to gain so little says much about how unhappy the airline was with the S-40. Their next clipper, the S-42 was a big improvement.
