1920 - Carl Fisher in his speedboat "We-We"

Biscayne Bay, Florida

Is there a possibility that Carl was one of the earliest boaters to scare manatees in South Florida? : ) Sorry, sometimes I think of unusual things that might not occur to most people.

other sizes: small medium original auto

My uncle lived on Fisher Island on the old quarantine base, which became the property of UM marine biology labs. He was the caretaker. Previously he was Gar Wood's captain of his yacht, which was a converted PT boat. Gar Wood bought the Vanderbilt mansion (The Alva Base, Vanderbilt's yacht was the Alva II) in the early 30's, I believe. I stayed out there as guests when Bebe Roboso and Nixon bought it from Gar Wood's estate. My uncle knew the caretakers and we had lots of parties out there AND they did have lots of dogs with the purpose of keeping people off the island.

Would you remember ORCA ? She was a Gar that raced in the off shore races in the mid sixties with Dick Bertams Moppie and Jim Wynne's WinMil, Sam Griffith and some others. As I recall Gar Jr. drove it and ran ripped out the bottom when he put it on a sand bar before getting too far out of Biscayne Bay. Reson I ask is that the boat ( we think it is the same boat) has been restored and now lives near a beach house of ours in Carrabelle, fl

Mr. Fisher was associated with Mr. Gar Wood in the sport of boat racing. Mr.Woods house on Fisher island had a huge ramp that faced Norris Cut where they used to access the bay with their high speed runabouts. The Gar Wood estate stood the test of time and weather for many years till the island was fully developed. As kids growing up in Miami we were frequent visitors to the island, and learned well how to avoid the caretaker and the big dogs he used to patrol the shoreline.
