1973 - North Dade and South Broward

Over North Dade County, Florida

Looking due north between NW 27th Avenue/University Drive and the Florida Turnpike. The Turnpike Extension to Homestead was only a year old. The land now occupied by the Dolphin Stadium was still undeveloped. Calder Race Track is visible just south of the Turnpike. Miramar and North Perry Airport are over the county line. Development west of University Drive is scarce. There was a golf course east of the Turnpike and the Calder property where the Homestead Extension starts. Sorry for the pink scratch up the middle.

The golf course mentioned was North Dade Country Club. It was between 203rd and 207th and 7th ave and the turnpike. Closed in the 80's and now is more houses. Grew up working and playing golf there. I also remember "The Bridge to Nowhere" 199th westbound . I guess they knew someday it would be needed so lets build it now. When you went under that bridge on the turnpike it said Honeyhill Drive but I don't remember ever hearing it called that. It was just 199th.

Guest, thank you for your comments. One minor correction is that Pembroke Road did not end at University, at least from the mid-1960's onward. My aunt lived 4 blocks south of North Perry from 1961 onward and we used to use NW 47th and 37th Avenues in Dade to get up there to visit her via Pembroke Road. Granted, Pembroke Road west of University was awful with a lot of bumps and dips and I believe there was a canal next to it on the north side but the road was passable. There was a small housing community on the south side of Pembroke Road west of University for many years all out there by themselves in the 70's.

That airfield pictured in the center IS Perry Airport. Look at the roads, Starting with the left side north/south road, that IS NW 27 AVE/University DR. The Turnpike Extension (east/west highway pictured) is crossing over it where the Calder Race Track is pictured. The next major east/west intersection is Miramar Parkway, also pictured here just north of the Turnpike Extension. The next east/west intersection is Pembroke RD which, at the time this picture was taken, dead ended at University DR. Perry Airport borders Pembroke RD to the south, University DR to the west and very close to Hollywood/Pines Blvd to the north.

Miami/South Florida, See it like a native!

oh yeah, that green spot west of the North Perry Airport was the South Florida Mental Hospital.

Originally there was a North and a South Perry Airport. North side was built in the shape of a wagon wheel, the south side was destroyed. Mr. Perry a dairy farmer donated the land to the military for the fields. His family name is on a few of the schools in the Miramar area. I asked Action Line once why there was no Perry Dairy Road as was Graham and Ives and Ludlum large dairies also. They had no answer except to say Graham, Ives and Ludlum didn't have airports named after them either!

If you don’t believe it is North Perry, just take a drive along Hollywood Blvd (north of the airport) on a clear night that the Dolphins or the Marlins are playing at night. Look down the north/south runways (18L or 18R) and you will clearly see Land Shark Stadium. Land Shark Stadium is directly south of Calder, proving this is North Perry.

It’s a pretty good bar bet (bet you can see Land Shark Stadium from Hollywood/Pines Blvd), not that I know anybody that drinks or goes to bars….

That is North Perry. NW 27th Avenue turns into University Drive in Broward and North Perry is on the east side of University between Pembroke Road and Hollywood Boulevard. I lived 4 blocks south of North Perry in the early 70's and know where it is.

Just to the north of the scratch you can see an old WW2 "wagon wheel" airport. I don't think it is Noeth Perry. North Perry is further to the north and west. It was closed by the time I started flying (1963), but occasionally one of us would slip in there just to say we'd done it.

One of the houses I grew up in ('68-'69) was on 199th street. I remember going down to play where the street ended with a bridge across the turnpike to nowhere! (Now Dolphin Stadium) - boy has that changed since the 60's...
