1960 - Sears Service Station at Northside Shopping Center, Miami

Northside Shopping Center, Miami, Florida

This Sears service station and tire center were located in the northwest corner of NW 27th Avenue and 79th Street in the southeast corner of the Northside Shopping Center. This view is looking west with 79th Street on the left. According to George W. Young, retired from the tire business, this Sears tire center sold more tires than anyone in Dade County at the time.

other sizes: small medium original auto

I appreciate everyone who has posted their comments here and I encourage more folks to post too.

Pamela, thank you for the update on the animals still being there. I may go over there and try to get some photos of them for John and others viewing the site. I took some photos of the center a year or two ago but I didn't get out of my car.

Does anyone have a picture of the cement turtles at northside shopping center. I played on those back in the 60s. If anyone does PLEASE send it to me. John, eagleswings77@msn.com. thank you.

it was cool reading the posting. I currently live down the street from northside. The cement animals are still there....imagine how many little hands and feet have been all over those cement animals from 1960 till 2011. As a matter of fact, i saw some kids playing on top of the turtle..you know the one with the long neck..they now have the blow up jump house and slides inside the rest area where the where the cement animals are. Northisde has truly come back to life..by the way Royal Castle is still across the street. Amazing I was born 1965 and i remember my mom buying my first "white jumper gym suite for PE class" from sears.

I bought many tires here in the 60s and 70s. The service was great.

I grew up not far from Northside.Shopping center. In fact my mother worked for the Sears in N.S not much after they opened that store. This brings back many memories. I can't tell you how many times we bought gas and tires at this same location.

From 1960 until the mid 70's we lived there. I remember Funland park across NW 79th Street and the old Royal Castle hamburgers. Now that I found this site I'll be checking back often. I'm now located in NC.

Jerry, Guest, Billy and Guest: thank you for posting some great memories below. I worked part-time on the second floor of Sears in Customer Service in 1965/66 and again from 1970 to the end of 1972 and I had forgotten about that part of Sears across the walkway and also the plant section out across the west parking lot.

I too remember when Northside opened and it was the "in" place to shop for a lot of us in the northern half of the county. We no longer traveled from Hialeah to the Little River area, the Biscayne Shopping Center or downtown to shop. I had also forgotten about the concrete animals for the kids to climb on - thanks for that memory.

Sears was the dominant presence at Northside. They were split into four parts: the service station by 27th Ave, the huge main store, the smaller store across the corridor which featured pets and toys, and across the parking lot was the Sears plant nursery. Each year as holidays approached, the toys were moved to the upstairs of the main store. Going up the escalator to the 2nd floor of that Sears was like the stairway to Heaven: you keep rising up and suddenly you're there: the slot cars zooming about, the GI Joes, the hustle-and-bustle. Right beside it was the electronics department, where we bought a tiny portable B&W Sears tv.

It was around '68 that they added the theater, way over to the north (it started out as one screen, and later split into two). That's where we saw "2001 - A Space Odyssey."

In the '60s into the early '70s, Northside was a wonderful place to be a child. Of those cement animal statues, my favorite was the turtle between Walgreens and Kresge's (previously Western Auto). Perfect for climbing and sitting.

Northside's jingle during the '69 Dolphin games on WIOD was "At Northside, every day's a great day... At Northside, shop the easy way". --X1
