Advertisement for the Drag Races at Amelia Earhart Field

Miami, Florida

According to Dick Besola, who is older than me and who knew just about everyone in town, these drag races at Amelia Earhart were run by three gents: Ernie Schorb, Harry Steele and another gent whose name he can't remember right now. Harry Steele invented the Xmas tree light device that changed colors downwards until it was the start of the race. They all belonged to a car club called The Cabriolets that met just a few doors in from the 103rd Street overpass on East 10th Court in Hialeah.

There was also another car club in the areas, Hialeah, I think called the Rod Benders. There plaque had their name and an art illustration of a piston with a bent connecting rod.

wasn't the third gent's name Carmichael... I believe I remember him being introduced as 'Hoagy' Carmichael, although he wasn't the musician... seems like he raced a pretty fast Chevy of some type... don't remember which car club he was with, I was a member of the Greater Miami Racing Association which sanctioned the circle track races in the area... Medley, later Palmetto Speedway and Hialeah.

Four clubs made up the SFTA (South Florida Timing Association)
1) The Ramblers (the most prestigious) run by Ernie Schorb.
2) The Road Rebels out of Coral Gables (the club I was in) whose job it was to run the starting line.
3) The Road Saints from West Miami. They gave out the timing slips.
4) The Cabriolets from Hialeah who, with Jerry Tyson, ran the clocks.

I remember that our car clubs took turns in helping run the drags, not just "Cabriolets " there was, "Lighting Rod"=ft lauderdale ,"Road Rebels"bird road miami," Road Stants"flagler steet "Scavenger's"coconut grove.
It took a lot of free help to run the drags.
