The historic FEC Deepwater Slip is the last body of water close to Biscayne Boulevard that hasn't been filled in like the other slips from the original old Port of Miami. It, and the open area of the adjacent new Museum Park, are one of the few areas of downtown Miami that doesn't have the view of the water blocked by a museum, basketball stadium, the Bayside shopping area, etc. The deepwater slip now carries the sarcastic alias of the "David Beckham Memorial Deepwater Slip" (thank you Larry Shane for coming up with that name on Facebook) because of the Beckham group's proposal to fill in the slip (after the city spent $15 million rebuilding the sea walls of it), as suggested by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. This was stupid "Plan B" after Beckham's group wanted to build the soccer stadium on the southwest corner of PortMiami on Dodge Island and it was rejected after strong opposition from some of the cruise lines. Beckham's soccer stadium would have been ten stories tall on the site of the filled-in historic deepwater slip and part of the brand new Museum Park that took 14 years in the making. The stadium would have blocked the view of the bay and taken up valuable and rare open space in downtown Miami at the new Museum Park. Fortunately for most local citizens, the City of Miami Mayor and City Commission took the deepwater slip site "off the table" because of strong downtown citizen opposition and rightfully so.
