2011 - a view of the Northeast Base, formerly the Eastern Airlines maintenance base and headquarters, at Miami International

Northeast Base, Miami International Airport, Florida view map

All that remains of the former Eastern Airlines headquarters and maintenance base, in this view, is Building 5A (behind the two B747's) which is occupied by Miami-Dade Aviation Department offices (Administration, Facilities, Contract Administration, Personnel, Fire Inspection, Accounting, etc.). Buildings 11 and 16 (the "Ivory Tower") were demolished in the corner of NW 36th Street and LeJeune Road. The contract maintenance hangar was also demolished to make room for the new runway 8-26 (now 8L-26R) in 2002. Other old shops and hangars were also demolished to make space available for a new giant warehouse building for Centurion Air Cargo.

In the background on the left side is the former Eastern Credit Union (now Space Coast Credit Union) building at 700 S. Royal Poinciana Boulevard, Miami Springs, along with the former Southeast Bank (now Wells Fargo Bank) building on the north side of 36th Street at 4999 NW 36th Street.

At the bottom of this photo you can see the elevated tracks for the new MIA Mover, an elevated people mover train from the MIC (Miami Intermodal Center) to the center of the terminal at Miami International. The MIC contains a consolidated rental car center which opened in July 2010, the east end of the MIA Mover station which opened in September 2011, and the Miami Central Station which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in early 2014. All rental car customers now ride the MIA Mover to the MIC to rent their cars and there are no longer huge fleets of rental car buses and vans transiting to the main terminal to pick up and return customers. The MIC also has an elevated MetroRail line that allows passengers to travel directly to existing MetroRail stations, something that should have been done in the 1980's when MetroRail was built. Tri-Rail will also have a station at the MIC when construction is complete.
