November 2012 - radiation specialist Lenia with the giant radiation machine that treated me at the Sylvester Cancer Center

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, U of M, Miami, Florida

I received radiation treatments Monday through Friday for a six-week period that ended on the day of this photo, November 13. Many thanks to Lenia and her partner in crime Paola, and a couple of other technicians, for their kindness, expertise and professionalism in administering my radiation treatments for the six weeks.

It's complicated but in my case it involved them making a custom mask for me that was tightly strapped down to the sides of the bed when I had my treatments. The open mesh mask was marked where the radiation was aimed. They move the bed precisely where it had to be and then aligned the machine above me to aim the radiation exactly where the oncologist ordered. A lot of it involves a computer that had the treatment areas stored in it and the machine followed the computer's directions. It doesn't hurt, at least in my case, except for some skin on my neck blistering somewhat after two weeks of treatment. I highly recommend the University of Miami's Sylvester Cancer Center and their team of doctors and oncologists. But the location of the patient generally dictates where they go for treatment.

That is a giant machine! How does this radiation machine work? I'm looking for a cancer center for my friend. She just got diagnosed with cancer.
