1930's - Naval Reserve Air Base Miami as depicted on the Miami Air Guide

Northwest Dade County, Florida

Thank you to Alvin Lederer for contributing this large high resolution image of the Miami Air Guide that allowed me to crop this image for display in this gallery.

According to the guide's map, the western portion of what would become Opa-locka Airport was a dirigible base, NARB or NAS Miami was labeled as "Navy Airport", and the dirigible hangar is labeled as "Municipal Dirigible Hangar" which would indicate that the City of Miami owned the hangar and not the Navy.

Correct, the Navy dirigible base was west of the heavier than air (airplane) base. The blimp hanger was owned by the City of Miami as it had been purchased from the navy at Key West, dismantled, and moved to Miami.

The one square mile Navy dirigible mooring site was donated to the Navy by the City of Miami in early 1932. It was used by the USS Akron on six occasions in 1933 and by the Macon three times in 1934. The only other dirigible to use the facility was the Graf Zeppelin in 1933.
