Tamiami Trail and SW 97 Avenue, Miami, Florida

The parcel inside the red rectangle was owned by the Archdiocese of Miami and Bishop Coleman F. Carroll hired a zoning attorney to change the zoning to apartment houses and stores. It was opposed by residents of the nearby single family homes and denied by the zoning appeals board but it was appealed and went before the full county commission which partially modified the zoning.

Unlike most of the land they owned back then, this is NOT a church now. I guess they bought it, wanted to increase its value, then sold it. They really thought ahead and bought land back when it was cheap for future churches. It would have great if our School Board had the same forethought.

I found some records that showed the Diocese owned west of 107 Ave between NW 25th and 41St. That's a huge chunk of land. I think they used a lot of it as a source for fill for their cemetery at 25th St and sold the rest.
