Karen Joy Criswell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in January 1953 but her family moved to Biscayne Park, a northern suburb of Miami, shortly thereafter. She attended Miami Shores Elementary, North Miami Junior High and graduated from North Miami Senior High in 1971. She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1975 and became employed as a teacher with the Dade County school system that same year. She taught at Coconut Grove Elementary and Palm Springs Elementary in north Hialeah. In 1980 she graduated from Barry College with a Master's in Guidance and Counseling. We met in 1981 and she saw someone in need of counseling and we married in 1982. She was a counselor at Poinciana Park Elementary in Liberty City for several years and then transferred back to Palm Springs Elementary. She served her last several years as a counselor at Hialeah Middle School before she retired in June 2007 with 32 years of service to the Dade school system.
