Canon 10D Disassembly Project

This gallery is chronicling via images the disassembly of the 10D. This 10D unit has broken CF pins, so my mission is to replace this assembly.
I must wait for the parts to arrive from Canon before I start this project.

Thanks for the photo's! They've been most helpful replacing my shutter. This turned out to be a huge undertaking. How they got the shutter flatcable in its place in the factory is beyond me. Eventually I nailed it though. I also replaced the shutter release button. This is also not as easy as it looks, being under other prints. The end result is satisfactory. Only one screw was left over at the end. :) A word or two of caution: 1) Never touch the flash circuitry (colored wires to the left) when the capacitor is loaded. 2) Never ever try to discharge the cap using a screwdriver, unless you like to bust your ears. There's a brutal amount of energy stored in that thing. Oh and try not to short circuit something when bolting the cover back on, it might cost you hours to find out what happened. Funny thing is, I might never know if it was a shutter malfunction at all, or another minor defect which got accidentally fixed in the process.

This really makes me want to do an IR conversion on my 10D.

Dear Stephen, To get to "613" from "611" (step 2 to 3 = back-panel removed,) there are visible the four now empty screw holes: two on the "left" (of PICT0613.jpg) in a vertical "column", and one on each side of the finder. What holds the "right" side, if anything? (I have those 4 visible screws out, and am wondering whether there are more or whether I just need to wiggle and lift to get the "right" side loose.) This is a wonderful thing you have done for all us 10D owners. My CF card slot doesn't work (EVERYTHING else does; e.g. I can take pictures if I remote capture over the USB cable). Repair quotes are high on the repair, so that one would be better off getting a 20D. My CF pins look fine but I thought I'd dissassemble, progressively, looking for electrical, moisture or mechanical faults relative to the CF. Again thank you for the excellent photo series. I jast know that my 10D has SONY monitor inside! The same as Cyber Shot camera :-)

For me, it's not just only screw left over, some electrical wires left also! The IR filter is fantastic looks, Thanks man!

Stephen, Thanks for sharing this rare look inside the 10D. I have been following your thread on DPR, and I will be checking back to see the progress. It's hard to imagine all this packed into the camera body. I am about to clean my 10D sensor for the first time, and I was looking at your photos with interest, wanting to see the actual anti-aliasing filter and sensor. You are one brave soul. I'm glad to hear that you have experience with this sort of thing, after seeing the photos and imagining 'myself' trying to get it all to fit back inside again, and actually work. I suppose you are making careful notes on what connections you unsoldered, so that you can get it all put back. I might add that these photos are excellent. Thanks so much for posting all this. I can't wait to see more... ~Tim

Read your DPReview thread. I usaed to be able to get them this far, but they would never go back together again. I would always have some screws left over. Good luck and thank you for taking the time to show.
