Sera Monastery - Scripture debate, Tibet

Founded in 1419, Sera Monastery is one of the three major monasteries of Gelupga, or yellow hat sect in central Tibet.
One of the most interesting time to visit the monastery is in the afternoon when monks, after finishing their morning scripture classes, can be seen debating in the courtyard. You can see the passion and intensity through their expression and posture. (Under construction)

The asker is the one standing, and steps forward as he questions. The famous gesture where the right hand strikes the left in a sliding clap, is really a question mark. It means "That is my question, over to you".
I love sharing cultures, and wanted to participate (at the Sera monastery in Lhasa), but my Tibetan is not up to scratch, and the translation was too slow.
As a secularist but lover of cultures, I often debate believers in Australia.

These scripture debate photos are fabulous. The many varied poses of the debaters are striking --- both their postures and their costumes. This is something that almost no one in the West knows about. Can you expand on your story about setting and the nature of the debate?
