Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card - What's the Fuss About?

Tons of people whined (and still whine) about Nikon's decision to use the SD format for the D80.

Understandably, those with a large collection of CF cards would be put off by this as they would have to make a new purchase. However, those who have already budgeted to buy new memory cards anyway would probably be delighted to know that SD cards are priced very cheaply (check here for current prices) these days, and you don't get the problem of bent pins like you do with CF cards.

This page is where I collect links pointing to useful information on SD memory cards

  1. Thread discussing the Nikon D80 SD card write speed test done by Rob Galbraith. Conclusion: The D80 SD interface is pretty fast, on JPEG faster than the D200, and on NEF pretty close; The 4Gb non-SDHC cards work in the D80. Note the Transcend 4Gb card was formatted in the D80 (the D50 cannot format this card); Ridata 150X SD is the best value for money for the D80.
  2. SD vs CF in terms of durability, crush and pin damage.
  3. Advantage >> SD card - no risk of nasty stuff (dust, for example) getting into holes
  4. Interesting tidbit about SD vs CF cards - SD is just storage memory which is written directly to, unlike a CF card which has a controller that is written to. In my opinion, that means the SD has one less component which is susceptible to failure vs the CF.
  5. A bad camera battery can result in failed data writes to the SD card
  6. Lee Lindquist uses a Mittoni SD to CF card adapter in order to utilize 4GB Ritek SD cards for his Nikon D200. And he reports that this setup transfers data as fast as the 4GB Sandisk Ultra II CF card.

Also, read this article on why it's advisable to purchase SDHC rather than SD memory cards for capacities equal to, or larger than 4 Gigabytes.
