The D300 was simultaneously announced together with the Nikon D3 and many were astounded that the D300 almost matched the D3's features and functionality in every way except that the D300 does not have a full-frame sensor, and has very slightly slower frame advance rates and a smaller buffer.
Many were relieved as the announcement of the D300 is seen as a strong statement by Nikon that it remains dedicated to the development of DX (1.5x, APS-C)-crop cameras and lenses.
