Long before he went to Texas, Sam Houston grew up in East Tennessee. He was adventurous from the very beginning, running off to live with the Cherokee for three years while a boy. As a young man of 18 he taught school in Rockford, in a schoolhouse built in 1794. It's said that he loved literature and amazed students by reciting battle scenes from Alexander Pope's The Iliad.
