Crapshoot With A Canon G10

Crapshoot: A venture with a highly risky or unpredictable outcome.
I got a new toy for Christmas and decided to set up a gallery to make a point of using it frequently. The Canon G10 - is it perfect? Absolutely not!! Noise - more than ideal even at low ISOs! Barrel distortion - noticeable particularly at the wide end, etc.....!! But guess what? I don't care - it's good fun and the camera controls make it a simple joy to use and, I actually enjoy just grabbing shots again, irrespective of the quality of the results!!! The results are straight out of the camera, with some level adjustments, sharpening and cropping. Below are numerous examples I'll be making a point to adding to................
Note: The emphasis is having fun, grabbing shots because I can, and with the small package makes it an excellent carry around, so there's no excuses not to!! This isn't about photography, which should be obvious!! Hopefully this will serve as an example of what the average user can expect from a Canon G10 if they take the plunge and learn some of the controls!! All the shots have the full exif as recorded by the G10, so it may help to explain the result in the shot. I have also added my own notes when it serves a purpose, or not!!

Hi Carrie, I'm pleased you like my gallery and it seems it's serving the purpose I intended in addition to me just having fun. To answer your questions.... Generally speaking the G10 is good for hand held shots as slow as 1/10th sec using image stabilization (IS). If I'm choosing to be more precise I will use a tripod but turn IS off. I don't use any additional lenses with the G10 as I got it for simple fun in addition to my regular camera bag. I don't use the viewfinder as it doesn't give enough coverage of the frame and with the lcd there's not many times you can't see what you want. I also turn grid lines on to help with framing, horizons etc. I'm not sure where to start to help you out, but one thing I can say is that anything you hear at your camera club applies to the G10. The basics for any camera apply irrespective of whether it's a point and shoot or a DSLR. The only difference is the level of control. Shutter speed, aperture and ISO all serve the same function, as does the exposure mode etc. The easiest way to start getting the best out of the G10 is to use it in P mode rather than Auto, and set the exposure compensation to -0.7, leaving the ISO at 80. I personally mostly use aperture priority and manual which is very easy to use as well. Basically just play, take lots of shots, try the same shots with different settings and see what makes a difference to the results you prefer. Ultimately everything is subjective, so my choices won't necessarily be the same as yours.

Hi there, I've found your site extremely inspirational! As a G10 user myself (a beginner), I look forward to using your instructions as a guidy in my own photographs (I find the manual quite overwhelming). Please can you tell me whether you use the viewfinder, or do you use a tripod? Also, please can you tell me what lenses you use (In particular for your macro shots, do you use the macro setting or do you have an extra lense). Thanks, Carrie

Hi Dave, I have a G10 and have been searching for a while now for a site just like this full of examples and instructions. I've found your gallery extremely inspirational and I look forward to using your instructions to aid my photos, as I find the manual a little overwhelming. I also go to a Canon photography club, but most of the members use DSLR cameras, so often I'm on my own. I'm so glad you've made this site available! Carrie

Thanks Guest - glad you like the shots. I think the Nikon P6000 would be considered a closer competitor to the Canon G10. I use Nikon SLR equipment but I've yet to find a Nikon point and shoot that grabs my attention for various reasons, hence I've always used Canon point and shoots. Ultimately the camera choice will be a decision on what you are trying to achieve and how much you know to be able to achieve it. With the exception of several shots, none of the above were taken in Auto. My concern with the P90 is the zoom range and how many problems that is likely to introduce in the final results. If landscapes and people are your thing then something in the P6000 and G10 will be a better choice. If a sparrows backside half a mile away are then something like the P90 might be a good choice. If you get Popular Photography May 2009, there's an article on camera choices below $499. Another good source of reviews is www.dpreview.com, although the number of reviews for Canon over any other manufacturer suggests a bias.

Hi Dave the Canon G10 is a great camera, but I got a Canon G9 and I dont update my camera. why not ? no camera is perfect, but I like my camera. I can tell you not even near that the camera can do. great gallery ( and there are always camera with error in them ). I dont go nowhere without it. best regards jan Mogensen

To Guest - I'm glad you liked the photos. Thanks. I took the pictures using the G10 not the other way round. and I'm not whining, simply pointing out that to many people who are used to a DSLR, there will be obvious flaws, which may not be acceptable to some. I'm not convinced the statement below would be considered a whine......... "But guess what? I don't care - it's good fun and the camera controls make it a simple joy to use." I love the Canon G10 and am happy to accept the flaws, but will switch back to my DSLR when I need far more control or better image quality.
