2007 R.I.P.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine.
We've wandered mony a weary foot,
Sin' auld lang syne.
We twa hae sported i' the burn,
From morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.
And ther's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll tak' a right good willie-waught,,
For auld lang syne.
I understand these lyrics about as much as I understand the meaning of life.

I got a new bike for Christmas!!!
Look what was under (well, on) my Christmas tree this year.
A brand new bike! It comes with a horn, banana seat, coaster brakes,
and if you look closely, you can see the streamers coming from the
ends of the handlebar. The front wheel turns, too!
Can't wait to go for a ride (it's 75 degrees here today).

Hair(cut) Today, Gone Tomorrow
Can you guess the name of the gentleman getting his haircut?
Hint: He leaves tomorrow for Portland, Oregon, and he has a strange affinity for seagulls.
The barber, by the way, is George, who calls himself the Barber of Seville.
He's been cutting hair for nearly 50 years, the last 29 in the same location.
He's become my barber, and he's the best I've ever had. When he's not cutting hair,
he enjoys being part of a group that sings Gregorian chants for various churches in the area.
Like any good barber, he's got lots of advice if you just ask -- on finances,
politics, raising kids, you name it. He's one in a million!
Anyway...who's silver streaks are getting trimmed here?
I'll post the answer in the form of another picture later...

I welcome any constructive suggestions and feedback, other than "get another model!" I'm stuck with this guy.
This was taken on a tripod, available light, and the background was my off-white wall. I think I should have shot f/4 or or even f/5.6.

Groovy
This is my mom. Her nickname is Groovy, given to her by her granddaughter
some years back. I won't tell you her age, she'd smack me into next week if I did.
She's been married to my dad (hit "Next" for his mug) for 64 years -- but they got
married VERY, VERY young. :-)
Although this is just a snap candid, perhaps it reveals something of what
may have been on her mind that day -- the day before Thanksgiving,
and three days before her granddaughter got married.

Grumpy
"Grumpy" is my 84 year old father's nickname, and he's as far from grumpy as they come. Still ballroom dancing several times a week, plays drums for the senior centers, has to be told NOT to get up on the roof to clean the gutters. Married to his childhood bride for 64 years so far, and counting. He's my dad, and I love him so!

This Thanksgiving, I attended a family wedding in Melbourne, Florida. My niece Kari is seen tossing her bouquet to all the eligible (and willing to participate!) single ladies at the reception. One of my first shots with my new 85mm f/1.8. Went to Balboa Park and shot in
RAW (hardly ever do that!) just to try out the lens. If you saw yesterday's

know I couldn't possibly wait until Christmas to try it out. I almost got a
shot of the UPS man driving away with his truck!

Christmas in November!
Santa is bringing me, via UPS, an early Christmas present -- a new 85mm f/1.8 lens
this afternoon. I am so excited, I put on my new robe (birthday present from my
daughter), which feels "Christmasy" and began the debate: do I wrap it up and wait until Christmas to start
using it, or do I go crazy and use it immediately? What do you think I will decide?

It may be humble, but...
This little house was witness to big hopes and dreams. Someone was
probably born in this house; perhaps they moved far away when they
grew up. The kitchen was, no doubt, the scene of laughter and tears,
home cooked meals, and simple pleasures. The house now stands empty
and possibly abandoned, amidst some of the last remaining open farmland
in Brentwood, California.

Compare and Contrast
I flew this afternoon from Sacramento to San Diego, the scene of terrible
wildfires recently. The shot on the left is taking off from Sacramento,
and the shot on the right is approaching our landing in San Diego. Not quite
the same height, but you can see for yourself the difference in air quality.
The area of San Diego in this photograph was NOT part of the burn area, but you can
literally see the air that hovers over even the most unscathed neighborhoods.
25-OCT-2007
Our County Administration Building
With all our fire in San Diego, I thought this was fitting.
The only "fire" is the lights on the CAB across the water.
That's all the fire we need.
I couldn't find my tripod until later, so this shot was taken
with a monopod. With a tripod the focus would have been sharper.
Even with a monopod and image stableazation (sp?), 1/5 of a second is a long time!
23-OCT-2007
The smoke gets pretty thick
Downtown, there is little or no fire danger. There is, however,
very poor air quality. There was a bit of photoshopping in this image.
If I hadn't artificially lightened the lower portion, you wouldn't be
able to see downtown. Maybe a filter on the lens would have helped but
I don't have that.
23-OCT-2007
The view east from the top of Mt. Helix
Mt. Helix is one of the highest points in San Diego. This is a view of our
fire looking east. The neighborhood below the flames is where my
daughter lives (primarily) with her mom and step father. They were evacuated earlier today.
23-OCT-2007
Bombs Away!
Perhaps this POV was a little shortsighted on my part.
22-OCT-2007
The scene at Qualcomm Stadium
This was the scene this afternoon at our football stadium, as thousands of people
came here to stay after being evacuated because of the terrible wildfires in
San Diego. They're reporting that well over 250,000 have been evacuated.
I went to the stadium to see what I could do to help; they put me to work helping
load palette after palette of bottled water for distribution in some other part
of the stadium. Hundreds of volunteers, tons of food, blankets, clothing, and
water. People were pitching tents everywhere (except on the field; they weren't
allowed there), or laying blankets behind rows of seats in the stadium.
The row nearest the camera was paper plates and such, then came the lines for
perishable food donated by restaurants, then came the place for canned food, and the
line farthest away were for blankets and clothing.
I took a few shots of tents and such, if you want to take a look.

It's 2003 all over again...
This isn't my picture -- I found it on the web and added the text.
This image is from our horrible 2003 Cedar fire, which claimed
2000 homes. Today we have SEVEN fires in San Diego County alone,
with extraordinarily high winds, absolutely no humidity (so everthing
is bone dry) and no change in the weather forecast for several days.
They're already saying it might be worse than 2003.
