Winter Tree

I don't know what kind of tree this is. I'm thinking maybe a variety
of oak. Anyway, every winter in Southern California, they have to be
cut back like this. This particular tree is probably 50 feet tall.

In the spring, this tree will send out shoots from
all these branches and be thick and leafy. If the shoots, which become
as thick as small branches, aren't cut back in the winter, the tree
soon gets out of control. It is usually trimmed after dropping all its
leaves. This tree will be nearly twice the height you see here once
the shoots and leaves return next spring.

By the way, anyone knowing MORE about this would really make me smile
if you would put that information in your comments below. Thanks!

Did you know that koala bears live on mulberry leaves?
I now know why koala bears are virtually extinct in California.

Amazing how these amputated knarled up trees come to life so spectacularly in the spring.
Interesting pic.

Gary I'd have to see a leaf to know ... maybe a Mulberry? Mine has to be cut back every year.
Re the image... I think it is a bit overexposed.

I love the strong lines of this, Gary. I've never heard of an oak that has to be cut back. I look forward to hearing more.

I am sure the oak in our garden in London is not related to this Californian, but we have to have ours trimmed every two years or else it becomes unmanageable. My tree is as undressed as this one. Good shot; I will take one of mine as soon as there is any light while I am at home!

Hmmm....... I'll look into it
