G. I. Gurdjieff belongs to the rare 'groupless' group of the mysterious and enigmatic Masters in spiritual history. The system of teachings which he brought from mystical sources in the East was called "The Fourth Way." The three ways existing up until that time were regarded as the Way of the Fakir (body), the Way of the devotee-monk(heart) and the Way of the awareness immersed Yogi (mind). The Fourth way was said to combine these other three paths in an integrated system to develop the potential of the full man, with a conscious effort and approach to integrate the heart, body and mind. It involved simultaneous work on the body, the emotional center, and the mind or intellect.
The work is about breaking through the “sleep” and habits which keep us from being fully who we are, and fully in this moment in freedom. The Gurdjieff Sacred Dances are physical techniques designed for expanding consciousness in a very specific way.
Gurdjieff called the Dances sacred for two reasons. One, they are used to preserve and transmit a a new concious awareness and they represent certain laws which govern the universe and all living things. Secondly, the focus of the dances is on the inner development of those who participate in them, rather than on performing for an audience.
Taking new, unusual positions enables us to observe ourselves differently. The Gurdjieff Dances break the cycle of automatism by introducing non-habitual movements and sequences.
Today few of Gurdjieff’s personal students are alive, but a new generation inspired by him and Osho's Vision for a New Humanity has grown, and are taking responsibility for what they received. Amiyo and her Groups sharings and work is a meeting and manifestation of this responsibilty.
