Easy Technique to Play With

Started by creating a duplicate layer and then a threshold adjustment layer over that, using the slider to create a black and white outline.
Next since the threshold layer has a layer mask on it, I used a soft brush with black to bring out color from below the threshold layer.
Flattened the image and increased the saturation.
Vignetted the edge with an inverted selection feathered 20 pixels and deleted the contents of the selection.
Next filtered with rough pastels and sandstone texture.
Next image done in same manner

Looks really beautiful. But I don't understand what the middle layer is used for.
