The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has developed a superb system of seven hiking trails that are of easy to moderate difficulty, inclusive of strategically placed rest benches. Beauty abounds as you meander along Big Cedar Creek, strike out up the slope and sheltered coves heavily shaded by hardwoods along the new Grapevine Hill Trail, sit for a rest on the stone wall at Big Falls, then continue on to the Clinch River, the breath-taking precipitous spire of the Pinnacle, or venture up Copper Ridge to the overlook. Keep in mind; however, that where beauty resides, danger often lurks as well. The trails traverse steep slopes of loose rocky terrain, inclusive of cliffs, within very fragile natural communities containing rare flora and fauna. Venemous animals hide under rocks and logs, in cracks and crevices, and under camouflaging loose leaf litter. For your safety and the health of the preserve, it is very important to stay on the trails.
