Hi Dirk.

Because all of your work is so great I didn't post any compliments for a long time and I would be doing nothing else than posting comments. Nevertheless I still regularly check-out your recent work which inspires me so much. And I admit I was more than a little concerned by the fact that I couldn't find any new work of you since almost five months already ... But now I'm re-assured to hear that you're still OK.

I'm so sorry that you're only in time need because of too much work !
Poor man :)

Can't imagine that you didn't go shooting all that time, I'm looking forward, hungry for your new work.

Kind regards,
Nick Clayton 15-Sep-2007 17:10

Just found you today and forgot for hours, what else i had planned to do.
Your very concentrated work often has a surrealistic touch, especially the minimalistic.
Only saw two galleries, as my access to internet is extremely slow, but i shall return.
Love your work and hope to be able to learn from it. Thanks for sharing.

Dirk,

I have long been a fan of your work. It is simply fantastic. You are a master of light! You are one of the few photographers here that are in my favorites. Love seeing your stuff.

Dus, thank you!
Gegroet,
Daan

Hi Dirk - G&M has been telling me to look at your galleries for months but I'm ashamed to say I've only just made it here - now kicking myself to see what I've been missing. I've only just scratched the surface of your galleries but I'll be back again to go through them properly - you have some truly stunning images on here, at a level way above most of the galleries on Pbase. I couldn't be more impressed. Best wishes, Steve

Thank you so much for your nice comments on my photos of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. I'm not born here, but feel Zeeuws Vlaming in every bone of my body. Though many may not see it, but it's one of the most beautiful parts of The Netherlands, full of nature's skills.
And the part of Belgium, close to my place has a lot of beauty spots too.
You're welcome any time for a visit in Waterlandkerkje, just mail me.
Seeing your portfolio, gives me goosepimples and as I am just a 60 year old amateur who knows nothing about the photographical techniques, I envy those who do. Well, sometimes I do when I see someone who is good in technique as well as in seeing the not obvious.

Thanks again, Titia

Dirk: Several years ago, I was first introduced to your photography through posts you made at DPReview.com. Since then, I have followed your progress and I am always amazed at what I see. You have taught me a great deal, my friend, without your even knowing it. I have learned that I have missed a million opportunities to capture a great image, because I always look for the obvious. You find beauty in the seemingly ordinary and, combined with your wonderfully whimsical sense of humor, have so often caused me to stop, smile and stare in awe at your finished image.

A career change (unplanned) has forced me to a crossroads where I must make a decision about what path to take for the rest of my life and I am almost ready to make the leap to get back into photography as not only a passion, but a profession (once again. I did this for 20 years until 1984). I am currently in the process of making a decision on which camera to upgrade to in order to support my work and am leaning towards the new, D2X. I recall your first posts with the S2 and was struck by the clarity and depth of the results. What are you currently using, if I might ask?

I cannot begin to tell you how inspiring your galleries are to me and I thank you for sharing.

Dirk,

Guest 26-Mar-2005 14:13
Too bad that for you the "perfect" (???) picture is at the expense of disturbing the animals, e.g. the bewick's swans...
Apparently you were seen there this winter (St-Margriete, Flanders), chasing the rare Bewick's swans away as you tried to get closer and closer and closer, while other people always kept a respectable distance in order not to disturb the swans. You can see that except for one picture, the swans are always flying away. Away from Dirk Vermeirre...
Remark that other pictures of swans are from mute swans, no wild animals.
A good nature photographer respects his subjects. Better stick to wedding receptions, photographing babies, or zoo-animals. In contrast to wild animals, they might be entertained by your attention.

Dirk, there are so many boring photographers in the world. It's a rare pleasure to
see a stylist so interesting that I am moved to study your methods and vision.
I am just beginning to look at your work but I see a lot of strikingly original
hallmarks. One is the way you place human bodies in space: two or three characters
in various planes in the field, some in focus, some not...which gives a very dynamic
and mysterious character to your studies of people. You don't always care about being
'sharp' or in focus. In fact, you use your seeming accidents to great effect. You
also are so deeply in touch with your artistic tradition, though I know nothing of
your part of Europe except that the Flemings and the Walloons don't like each other.
You draw from the 'other' Vermeer and so many visual innovators, it's beautiful
to witness your artistic process. Thanks for the inspiration.

Dirk, There are many photographers that can take a technically competent photograph. Perhaps they follow the rule of 1/3's or one of the many other rules of photography that we all hear about. What you do has no rules though... because art cannot be created with rules. You have well crafted art! I suspect, by just looking at your photos, you photograph based on instinct. You see what many and most do not. The beauty is you see all this and more in a split second. You are a GREAT communicator. Thank you for sharing your fine work and now that I have found your gallery I will return again and again and again. B-Real

Hi Dirk. I regularly, twice a week at least, visit your gallery and like your style very much! It would be really nice if you would be able to include some shooting information with your photographs. I often start thinking what lense you have been using with that particular photograph. From learning perspective this information, and maybe the full EXIF data, would be usefull. Btw, as a Fuji S2 Pro shooter myself as well, I'm interested in knowing whether you shoot all your B&W with the in-camera B&W setting or whether you change the mode after the fact.

(avondonderwijs) ... 't was vooral de uitdaging die telde. (was reeds de 50 voorbij..) Sommige van je "straatfotos" doen me denken aan Cartier-Bresson. Je loopt echt tussen de "slachtoffers". (zonder uitgesproken groothoek of tele-lens)

Of caurse, I appreciated a lot your positive comments on my photos.
But now that I saw your work, I am 10 times as happy because nice words from someone with this background count 10 as much!
You really have an eye for minimalism, composition, and sentiment expression.
What can I say... Congratulations!
Gerasimos.

I have to spend more time to see your photos in detail. So far I have seen the gallery of the Swans. It is just fantastic. You are very good indeed.

Some of your pictures are breathtakingly beautiful, some are puzzling and some I don't understand. But they are always interesting.
This is my favourite so far http://www.pbase.com/image/24521030

Dirk,
Thanks for sharing . . and the work involved . . . I agree that Lighting Effects . . gives us many capabiilties. I see the photography as "Digital Eye Candy" and our abilites with Photoshop as improving the recipe. I'll return to see what you're doing next. Best regards and Happy New Year!

Hi Carol, oh thanks, that's very kind of Phil. Well I photograph indeed very much and also have regularly commercial photo work to do but mostly don't put that on the site. I am proud that I can inspire you and photography is really a passion of me. Thanks for your kind comments,

With warm regards,

Hello Dirk, I found your galleries through Phil Douglis, and have since put you on my favorites list. Seems like almost every day you post some more intriguing photograph galleries, and it's a pleasure to look at them all! I'm relatively a beginner in this photography game and your work really inspires me in many ways. I love your Saturday afternoon gallery! Such a great hand at capturing the most natural expression in people, and to do it with such energy and honesty is quite wonderful. Thanks for sharing all your work with us all!
Phil Douglis 30-Nov-2003 00:51
Hi, Dirk -- Thanks for that wonderful comment on my Swan photo http://www.pbase.com/image/23370272). I greatly appreciate it, because it comes from someone who is certainly familiar with this particular subject matter. I have posted a comment in response to your comment under that picture.

You are among my favorite photographers, Dirk. And now I know why -- you must work at it tirelessly. Anyone who has invested 30,000 images in just swans, is someone who knows that photography is a continual journey of discovery. My time with that particular swan was very brief, but I was able to learn enough to be able to eventually capture that image. I can imagine the staggering depth of knowledge that you must have amassed by now on just swans alone!

Effective images are created through consistent experimentation, knowledge, and experience, and your investment of time, energy, and thought is certainly reflected in all of your thought provoking photographs.

Thanks again, Dirk,

Phil

Hi Dirk

Having a look through your galleries was an absolute pleasure. I love the restraint you demonstrate in both your composition and use of colour. The results is a style that is both very individual and visually beautiful.

Cheers,Rob.

Hi Dirk:

You are one of the best at pbase, so your words do carry a lot of weight. Thank you. I think you know what I think about your images, and I can't say enough without repeating myself over and over again, but I'll say, along with others – you should have your work published. If and when you do, tell me. I'll buy the book.

Beste papa,

Dirk, just a note to thank you for leaving all of those comments on my photos. I have added my comments to your comments -- an important function of my galleries is the commentary they stimulate and the dialogue that comes out of those comments. Thanks so much for contributing. When you get the chance, go back to my galleries and take a look at some of the shots I added last night. I went through my pre-digital files and picked eleven I think you might enjoy. (You'll find them at the end of most my galleries!)

Dirk,
Thank you very much for visiting my roma gallery and for the comments you made. Very helpful, I'll check out the crop suggestion you made, it made a lot of sense. The hired guns photo was taken at piazza navona and yes...I think that is a gun in his pocket! I just checked out some of your gallerys and they are truly inspirational. Your use of light is fantastic, very skillful and your composition masterful. I need to spend some more time with your images, they are extremely enjoyable. By the way, I live in Amsterdam so we're neighbours!

Hi Dirk!
I know you come from Belgium dear neighbour (i'm french). I'm going on writing in english 'cause i don't konw if you speak french.
About the great S2 pro i guess that it is definitely the best cam for portraits and fashion shots. Do you have other SLR cams?? I have a Sony DSC-F717 but i'm saving money (very tricky aim) to get a SLR digicam (6Mpx minimum).
A Fuji S3pro is coming out this year so the S2 would decrease its price (i hope so). I would love to shoot models and people (my friends first for fun and i'll see later).
Do you have a studio?? Personaly i find lightning very difficul to realise, do you have some tips or advices for me??

Groetjes,
Dirk

Hi Greg, thanks for your very kind message and your interest and yes everything is well but I have to much work, a good thing is that I have more and more photographic assignments to do for my clients and that they are very happy with the results. A few months ago I became obsessed by the beauty of swans and interested in their behavior and since then I spend almost all my free time in visiting and searching them to make new pictures, I think that this will continue the next months as I also want pictures of them on ice, in the snow, in the fog, etc.. Will make some time to visit your latest additions in your galleries as I always loved the high pro quality and perfect compositions that you made. If you ever must plan to visit Belgium give me a call or mail me.

With warm regards,

Dirk

Dear Dirk,

I discovered your art work past night till 6.30 am ... (don't have to work today ...). I also visited your home page. You have a fifth sense for composition. You 're not only a fantastic photographer, but also a great humorist. Your humour gives a new dimension to - at first sight - common pictures. You inspire me. And I realise that I'm really honoured that you left a compliment in my gallery. Thanks a lot.

One question though : what camera do you use ?

Dirk: Thank you for visiting my galleries and for the kind comments. I want to look at all your galleries but this will take some time because you have so many pictures and I have a slow connection. I love those simple yet powerful images I've seen. Maybe I should leave five stars (* * * * *) as a comment so I don't have to repeat myself. I have seen only four galleries so far, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing more. – Tom

Hi, Dirk... I have followed your progress from the time you first posted in dpreview when I admired your original approach of taking and presenting pics. Salut Dirk

It's really nice to see some of your work gathered in these pages.
I was glad to see again some of the pics you posted already in the dpreview forum. Some of them were new to me, and one of my favorite ones is "alone". I think your best pictures are the very minimalistic ones, and when your pictures look like a painting.
I also enjoyed the "series". This is very original, and the spring series was very funny.
I also liked to discover your "office".

"See" you soon
Take care

iDirk,

Dirk
