Lewes Bonfire Night 2006 & 2007 (Guy Fawkes Night)
Photographs of the Bonfire Night celebrations in Lewes, East Sussex, U.K. 4th November 2006 & 5th November 2007.
Every year around Nov 5th the townsfolk parade through town in various costumes accompanied by industrial quantities of firecrackers, flaming tar barrels and torches. The police have their hands full trying to control the crowds.
Firework-filled effigies are paraded through town before being exploded in spectacular style. Most years effigies have included the Pope (although not the current one) and Guy Fawkes (the plotter who tried to blow up the houses on Parliament in 1605). 17 flaming crosses are carried through town representing the protestant martyrs burnt at the stake between 1555 and 1557. Effigies of topical figures from the past year are also created (hence Condoleezza Rice aka the 'Pawn Star' and Steve Irwin). Political correctness does not appear to be a priority!
