This appears to be one of those winters for Canadian birds drifting into NY in search of food. . All things going in cycles, there is little seed supply for many birds such as Redpolls, Pine Siskens, Bohemian Waxwings, and the Pine Grosbeaks. A few years ago, the vole population crashed in Canada and we had lots of owls and raptors. Of special interest was a Great Grey which had not been reported in NY in years. That crash happened in the spring costing many raptors that year's young. The crash in food supply this year was in the fall and maybe the first year birds have a chance. At any rate, it promises to be an interesting year for us birders. I have had none at my feeders but hopefully after the holiday I can go exploring! We are expecting a snow storm tonight that could bring a foot or more of snow. Perhaps that will improve the visits to my bird feeders.
