The old train station that at one time was the center of travel life in all Western New York. I remember as a small boy coming to this station with my parents to take a train to South Bend Indiana. One of my first trips back to college after Thanksgiving vacation (1966) departed from this station. That is my last recollection of this complex as an active functioning facility. It was a wonderful building. Today, Saturday, Nov 5, 2005, Ben and I couldn't get into the terminal building itself, but drove around back and discovered the old freight terminal portion of Central Station. We spent at least an hour walking around the abandoned freight terminal and taking photographs. A great morning.
The below paragraph was taken from the historical site mentioned above and is property of railfan.net
Construction of the 17 floor combination office and terminal building was begun in 1927 and completed in 1929. The Grand Opening of the facility on Saturday, June 22, 1929 was highlighted by a noontime Chamber of Commerce luncheon for 2,200 people, the largest event of this type held in Buffalo up to this point in time. Band music, speeches, flags and bunting completed this gala celebration. At 2:00pm the crowds hurried down to the platforms to watch the departure of the 2:10 eastbound Empire State Express. Approximately 200 daily trains began using Central Terminal that midnight.
There are more recent images here than the ones I took on my visit here with Ben. Today, October 12, 2008 I've added shots taken from the rear of the terminal and the passanger platforms. Also, I peeked around in the old abandoned building just west of the platforms.
Yesterday, December 29, 2008 I visited the old frieght terminal once again and you will see those shots included in this gallery.
Love the pictures. I remember as a small child (around 1950) going with my Grandma to pick up a relative at the station. Downstairs from the main terminal were rooms you could rent that included a bed and mini bathroom for those who were having to wait for the next train. I was so enchanted with these little 'apartments' and loved to look and dream about living there. I have been back to the Terminal probably 20 years back for a walk through, but didn't find the little apartments. Were they in my imagination? or were they really there???

I don't have words to explain how pleased I am to see this pictures, I am from Costa Rica, but my dad's family is from Buffalo, I just returned last july 13th form there after leaving for the first time for 4 months.
I was leaving between William and Broadway in Detroit st. The Central Terminal was my favorite place! I love it! Every day I needed energies i ride my bike to this place..
I love this place, I'm glad they are repairing it, but it also looks so nice when there is no one there. it has a magical energy.
I'm impressed by this pics, Congratulations!

Don't feel too bad--we had two railroad's running thru Crown Point,Indiana, since before I was born(1942)They both departed in the 70's and 80's.I live about a mile from where I put a penny on the rail for a steamer around 1952.I worked a couple week's on Erie track gang out in the country, but obligation's took me to other work.Other than that I ran a trackmobile for a couple month's for Kaiser Aluminum.Unforunately,I have been on only one rail trip that from Gary Indiana to Harrisburg, pennsylvania and back.I still remember the Monongahela mist and the cliff's in the early morning on the way into Harrisburg, along with Diesel aromatic's,pleasing to me as a child.Dream-- Since 1986 I have modeled in HO and studied rail history of the world, missing little,I'm sure. Everything get's old and tired--rest easy--
