I think that there is a connection between George Johnstone Stoney who introduced the term "electron" in the 19th century, to the North Tipperary branch of the family. Major Stoney lived in Portland House up to about 1926. His family had owned about two thousand acres but between the Land Commission and death duties he was reduced to about 100 acres and a smaller house. Portland house was burned in 1936 and he expected the same to happen in 1942 to his new house so he sold up and went to Killaloe. My father bought his house and farm in 1942. When the last of his family, possibly a sister, was buried in Lorrha there was no one left to carry the coffin.

My assumption is that this is the same Stoney line that are the ancestors of Alan Turing; cryptologist and computer expert who worked on the Enigma problem at Bletchley Park during WW11. A George and Mary Stoney emigrated to Southern Ireland in the 17th century.George took up his abode at Knockshigowna. In 1907 Alan's mother,Sara Stoney, married Julius Turing. In 1949 my mother;no relation to the above, took my sister and myself back to visit relatives. My great-aunt lived in a very small cottage at the foot of the hill. The cross on the top lit up at night, but we had no power in the cottage and no water supply!
