These soldiers had been through one month of training, and are about to have a ceremony beside the Western Wall where they will presented with an automatic weapon.

These soldiers who have completed the first phase of their training are waiting in the tunnel under the arches by the Western Wall for their ceremony which will take place in the plaza. There they receive a copy of the Hebrew Bible and swear allegiance to the State and vow to protect their country. They are paratroopers and later when they complete their maslul (training) will exchange their green berets for red ones.

In Israel solders receive automatic weapon on the first day of their training. This ceremony is for fresh paratroopers, celebrating acceptance of the small dragon tag that you can see on their shoulders on other photos, and to hear prime minister that usually makes speech on this occasion, because paratroopers were first to enter Jerusalem in 1947
