I think they are happy because they don't 1) enjoy the freedoms of being a woman in the west and 2) they have nothing to compare their meager existences to. Wonderful capture by the way. This could be one of those Nat Geo images.

This is a great photo; the narrow depth of field nicely softens her features, making her appear even more approachable than her radiant smile shows us. She reminds me of the many kids and teens I met while visiting northern Pakistan--simple, friendly, and content with what little material things/comforts they have.
