This is Crown Point and the building is the Vista House.
Some history:
Just as the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, the Vista House serves as the symbol of the Columbia River Gorge.
In fact, the architect of the Vista House -- Edgar Lazarus -- and Emma Lazarus (who wrote the poem of the Statue of Liberty), were brother and sister.
The Vista House was built in 1916 at the same time as Highway 30
(what is now the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, and the only way to reach Crown Point).
The building was designed to be a place of refreshment and enjoyment of the Columbia Gorge.
Comments on the aesthetic considerations:
The main reason I didn't crop tighter on the Vista House was to "tell a story".
The whole reason the Vista House was built was to formally celebrate the gorge's incredible scenery made available with first real highway through it.
So by including some of that grand view of the gorge it starts to get at the whole reason the Vista House was built.
That adds an element of meaning and as humans, we seem to be hard-wired to crave and even demand that everything has meaning or an explanation.
So the story telling is aimed at providing the viewer with a 'visual metaphor' to enage in.
The light presented itself as a special opportunity when it illuminated the Vista House
Frequently the gorge can be heavily overcast and very gray so this light was a blessing
