Akbar began construction of the Agra Red Fort in 1565, primarily as a military structure. Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, transformed it into a palace where later he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in 1658. For 8 years until his death, Shah Jahan could only gaze from Musamman Burj at the tomb he built for his wife, the Taj Mahal.
