Charles F. Brush High School — Class of ’61 Hi-Lite Yearbook
Waxing poetic about a special place and time.......
I’m always taken aback as I page through our high school yearbook. In my humble opinion, America was at its pinnacle from the end of the Korean War (1953) to when Vietnam started heating up (mid to late 1960s), and we (Class of ’61) are enormously lucky to have lived our innocent adolescence years during that very special time.
Oh, we didn’t have the cell phones, iPods, rad computer games or any of the high-tech toys of today. But I’m not disappointed one bit. I’ll take my Wilson baseball glove, Louisville Slugger bat, Raleigh football and Schwinn bicycle, not to mention rock ’n roll music, Cushman motor scooters, ’50s Harley Panheads, and ’55, ’56 and ’57 Chevys (Tri-Fives) any day of the week over today’s bling-bling play toys.
Moreover, I believe Brush High was at its pinnacle during the ’50s and early ’60s, and we are very fortunate to have been part of those memorable moments of an innocent and simpler place and time.......a time when chrome was thick and schools were great.
We had excellent academics, outstanding teachers, a safe environment, responsibility, discipline, and hope that helped make it that very special place and time. Pages 16 and 17 highlight the Brush tradition rather well. I love the photo on page 15: the amazing wonders of the mind. Looks like a mischievous gal and innocent guy to me, don’t you think......?
Kudos to the smashing Class of ’61 Hi-Lite Staff and crack photographers (pages 98-101 & 182-183) for conceiving an outstanding yearbook and preserving our memories in time.......They rock!
A heartfelt thanks to our wonderful and excellent teachers who taught us so well, drummed sense into our heads and kept us on the straight and narrow.
A special thanks to the wonderful Service Staffs (pages 32 & 33) who kept our tummies nourished, our classes organized, our sights focused, our sounds sharp, our classrooms brightly lit and warm.
And God bless all of our cherished classmates who have passed on. They all hold a very dear and special place in my heart, a special bond, and will not be forgotten.......
