Kizhi

When I was in Goritsy, it was raining. But, while I reached Kizhi Island, it was even stormy.

This island is an open-air museum of old Russian wooden architecture, but the paths got very buddy and I didn't walk around too much. The Transfiguration Church is by far the most famous and incredible landmark. Erected without any nails, this church was built in 1714, during the reign of Peter the Great. Unlike most of the Russian churches with 5 onion domes on top, the Transfiguration Church has 22 of them, all covered with hundreds of aspen shingles. On a fine day, the cupolas should look strikingly beautiful, gleaming in the sunlight and moonlight. Unfortunately my photos can only tell how they look in the pouring rain. Besides the bad weather, the church was under renovation as well.

Nevertheless, some simple subjects by the river bank that might not attract the other tourists, caught my eyes. I had to tell myself they looked interesting because they were wet. It was the only consolation after getting myself, my gears and my camera bag all soaked.
