Elsinore - in danish "Helsingør" - city of Hamlet in Shakespeares play. Ancient town, situated at the Sound, about 45 km. north of Copenhagen, opposite the swedish city Helsingborg. Elsinore is dominated by the famous old castle and fortress Kronborg, where the action in "Hamlet" is said to take place.
