Rwanda (March 2006)

These photos provide a record of a medical mission to Rwanda by representatives of Physicians for Peace (www.physiciansforpeace.org) during the period 4-18 March 2006 (actually 6-17 March in country). Members of the team comprised Dr. Glenn Geelhoed, MD, team leader, other MDs, medical students, various other medical professionals, and a few hangers-on (e.g., myself).

The galleries are organized by day, and where appropriate, special groupings. In some cases, a photo may appear in the gallery for the previous day -- some idiot forgot to change the time zone in my camera, so times are EST (GMT-5); Rwanda is GMT+2. To view a gallery or an individual photo, just click on the thumbnail.

Please note that the photos are pretty much "out of the camera", i.e., they haven't been cropped, color/exposure adjusted, or otherwise spiffed up. I'd like to think that most of the photos will eventually look better than they do here. As I do the spiffing-up, I'll repost photos. There are often multiple similar-looking photos; these are the result of my trying to "get it right" in some instances and rapid, multiple-shot sequences in other cases. As I can I'll try to eliminate the dross. Also, please excuse the initial lack of annotation of the shots. I've been having enough trouble just getting these puppies up on the net from the local internet cafe here in Kigali.

The galleries are organized by day, and where appropriate, special groupings. To view a gallery or an individual photo, just click on the thumbnail.

Also please note that, while most of the photos are of just people and landscape, there are a number of shots of patients and individual injuries, lesions, and other disease presentations. None of these are intended to embarass or invade the privacy of the patients, but to document the problems with which we dealt and the treatments provided. If there is anything that we all have taken from this mission, it is the incredible strength, courage, and pride of the Rwandan people, and we have felt both humbled and honored to have been able to proved some level of assistance.

Enjoy.
