3/31/05 - Sunning
ds20050330_0143awF Sunning.jpg

Great Falls, Potomac, MD

Another shot from my walk along the C&O towpath. This is a cormorant. I understand that this is the only variety of cormorant found on the east coast. In addition, this is one of only two or three varieties that have freshwater habitat. There was a group (gaggle, fluttering, flock, exhaltation?) of about 20-30 of them in the "wide spot in the canal". (In Nebraska, we called that a town.)

Another little piece of cormorant trivia I recently found out ... this guy is sunning himself (herself?) with his back to the sun, although he will turn around to sun his tummy. They do this for two reasons. First, cormorants don't have much oil in their feathers, which isn't great for water birds, so they have to sun themselves to dry off (except for rookeries with electric dryers). Second, they use the sun to tan and tone their feathers, since it is well known that buff cormorants get more chicks.

For much cooler shots of some cormorants (a different breed/type/whatever), see my New Orleans Zoo gallery

Buff cormorants get more chicks? Sounds like a bumper sticker! ROFL. Good shot, and thanks for the commentary which was fascinating!

Hi! I like this photo and the info to go along with it!

Howard,

This shot was actually taken in the canal -- the area near Great Falls where it widens into a small lake/pond. They have a lot of construction going on right there, including some earth moving. So, I'm sure that a good deal of the brown here (vs. the river) is due to both the recent rains and the constructions.

Thank you for explaining why the commorant does this. I have watched them stand with their wings spread for the longest time along the lagoons in the park. They are comical birds.

I live farther down the Potomac, and the water looks the same. It's sad, really, that rivers have turned so brown. Man just can't embrace nature, can he. I know that we have had some real rain lately, and I'm sure that has contributed to the muddy water. But when I was a kid I remember visiting Great Falls and seeing much clearer water. Even on the Potomac where I live, the water once was a lot clearer. Now ... Man just doesn't realize what he is doing. Otherwise, a nice picture. I enjoyed being reminded of Great Falls. Is the Merry-Go-Round still there? I tried for that prize ring many times.

The odd stance of the cormorant always fascinates me. They're otherwise rather ugly little guys.
