8/29/04a - The Sadness of War

Washington, DC

I think nothing exemplifies better the sadness that must weigh on the soul of man as a result of war than the statue of Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial. No one who has ever stood at the foot of this magnificant sculpture and looked up into those eyes can fail to feel that sadness in the very core of his being. I have visited this memorial more times than I can count, and every time I've looked up, I've turned back with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. Although the memorial is deeply moving at any time, a visit at night, when you can turn around and see the reflecting pool, the Washington Monument, the Capitol building, and now the WWII Memorial, is one of the most moving experiences one could ever have.

There is a smaller version of this in Hodgensville Ky. Where Lincoln was born. It too has this sadness to it.

Beautiful image. Very nice colour tone and cropping.

Very good indeed. Appropriately somber tone, yet not so dark as to lose details in the shadows. Excellent exposure.
