8/7/04 - SP 10a1

Simple light from 100w desk lamp. Sorry I look like such a sourpuss -- but, I guess I'm just an old sourpuss.

SP - Crop. Levels adjustment (to overcome yellow tint from the lights). Small USM adjustment. Soften focus with a duplicate layer w/Gaussian blur (~10), normal blend, ~35% opacity. Eyes erased on blurred layer so sharp focus shows. Extract out background and fill with solid black. Color version saved. Convert to greyscale. Layer adjustment to contrast/brightness. B&W version saved. Convert to duotone. Use dark Pantone blue and black as duotone colors. (Intention was to keep photo essentially B&W but a bit softer than black on black would give. Tweaked the blue curve.

Using duotone (vs colorizing, etc.) was Jeanne's suggestion. Also, this is the first time I've tried the GB to soften focus -- also Jeanne's suggestion. (She's a treasure on many levels, ain't she? Don't tell her I said so, though; she's likely to get a big head of red hair.)

Masterfully done.

Actually, I wonder if sagey in my case shouldn't mean ready to stuff into a turkey. (Sage dressing)

Nice work -- makes you look sagely. Like a sage. You know what I mean. Makes you look wise.

Nice self portrait - like this half face composition and the light.

I love the half face idea! I haven't done that ....yet! LMAO! As for the duotones, I'll go have a look, but I ususally go for them myself!

Impish, huh? Does that work as well attracting women and having a dog? Nah, I didn't think so, either. Anyway, one thing that kinda got lost in the duotoning was a hint of my shirt color and shoulder. Now, I'm afraid, the face looks a little too spector-ish. (Never you mind the man behind the curtain!)

Karen, I agree on it seeming a little too dark. I have a couple of other variations in my SP gallery, including the pre-duotone. I think I just haven't had enough experience in the selection of duotone colors (or brightness/contrast) and just knowing good tone/contrast/color balance when I see it. Hmmm... might be helped by other pbase examples, ya' think? :) Thanks for your comments.

Awesome SP!

You don't look like a sourpuss, kind of impish flicker of a smile in both mouth and eyes.
Did good here, good crop, and not too harsh lighting (or fixed in PS) but it still seems black to me (maybe I need a calibrate..) Anyway, like it.

Jude -- *You* have a lot to learn??? Hey, woman, it's yours, JHR's, and a few others' portraits where I go for admiration, ideas, inspiration, ... and humility. Thanks.

Excellent SP, Dennis. I love the crop (composition) and the tones are very nice. Duo-tone... there is so much to learn.. sigh
