Saint Canicus Church - Founded 1862 - Mahanoy City, PA

Mahanoy City, PA

This very large Catholic Church in Mahanoy City has a school on the upper floors.

It is scheduled to close by July 15th along with 31 other local area Catholic Churches.

Before this church opened for services ... masses were celebrated in "Blind Ryan's Bar Room" ...... Why does that not surprise me? ...... lol

I would like to know who is in charge of the St. Canicus cemetery lawn care? I have relatives buried there and they paid for perpetual care and the upkeep of the place is atrocious !!! I do realize that the location and the hilly landscape makes it a difficult mission to handle, but the grass is so very high and overgrown that I can’t even see the bottom of my grandparents tombstones. I would cut it myself but I don’t live nearby. Can anything be done to improve this? Can they get another company or have it mowed more often? Its so sad to see this! Very distressing!!!

Seeking a copy of the baptism record for John O. McMenamin, son of William McMenamin (spelling of the last name could have been McManamin or McManemin). The birth date was 1 January 1890 and the baptism date was 26 January 1890.

St Canicus and the rest of the churches in town were merged together to form
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (the former St Joseph Church.) The parish rector is located at 600 W Mahanoy Street, Mahanoy City, PA 17948. Phone number is (570)-773-0550 or
(570)-773-2771. Fax number is (570) 773-1937. A lot of people from town decide to go to St Richards Church located in Barnsville, PA. (570)-467-2315

Doing genealogy on my husband's side and we're trying to trace John Haughney and his wife, Bridget (Kehoe) Haughney as to where they are buried. Where can I get this info? It would be a great help. Please reply. Thank You!!

Did anyone receive a response on where St. Fidelis/St. Canicus church records can be found?

Where are the records from St. Canicus stored? I, too, am doing research and would like to find records from the church. Thanks.

I am doing geneology on my family and most of the records I need are from St. Fidelis, which merged with St. Canicus. If St. Canicus closes where are they going to store the records?

Very well composed shot of this industrial looking church. I like your point of view. "V"
