2003 - Iron Sakyamuni Buddha

Mangisa Buddhist Temple, South Korea

This gold-plated Buddha is a typical seated iron Buddha of the Goryeo period.
Its hands and right arm have been restored. A sense of solemnity can be observed
from the curly hair, dense face, rather broad shoulders and the seated posture.
Although the original hand gesture cannot be known, it seems the restored hands
depict it correctly. The vestment exposes the right shoulder and is folded on
the left shoulder to show stair-like wrinkles. This Buddha in a shape of a a
regular triangle shape shows a stable and imposing look. It is a typical iron
Buddha that represents the Buddhas of the Goryeo period with its detailed wrinkles
on the robe and a rather plain face.

Yes, when I first came to Korea I assumed all Buddha statues would look the same.
I like Korean Buddha statues.
They look more calm, peaceful, and compassionate than those from other countries.
