Possible Hoary Redpolls (female 'exilipes')

Millbury, Ma

These are two birds I previously reported being uncomfortable calling Common or Hoary. The overall color is fairly dark but the amount of white on the back is suspicious. Also, the face appears "frosty". To me, the streaking on the side is very intermediate, as is the amount of white on the rump, and on the wings. The head shape on both birds looks good for Hoary but I don't really like to use head shape (even though these birds fit the bull-headed, flew-in-to-a-window-pushed-in-bill description). In the next photo, the bird on the right is seen at a different angle showing the intermediate amount of streaking under the tail.
