The middle individual was noticeably larger than the other redpolls present. The bill is also larger in comparison to the rest of the body. The undertail is very heavily streaked, as are the sides. The back is a much darker brown than the other individuals present. One marking on this individual that does not make it rostrata-ish is the contrast between the eyebrow, and cheek. Needless to say there is so much variation that this could be a larger darker flammea ('Southern') or a lighter rostrata ('Greater'). The other birds in the shot are the same size (bill and body) but are obviously much lighter. This group seems to contain a fourth individual (not seen in this shot). This group seems to prefer to feed on the ground away from the other redpolls present. The other other bird in this shot is a 'Slate-colored' Junco... but... one headache at a time.
